Hi, I'm a part of a chat site geared towards a younger people. The demographic is majority white people (great). On this site, we're allowed to buy and design parts to decorate our avatars. Today, someone designed a warbonnet and it sold like wild fire. I've just emailed the site questioning its decision making in accepting that design and gave some helpful links to explain why this cute little accessory is not innocent or ok. If they don't follow up with me, what actions should/can i take?

Wow, had a whole reply typed and then Tumblr erased it. Sorry.

This is a problem with many sites. They won’t address the racism because they don’t want to be seen as “censoring” people there. And in most cases, they won’t even get involved.

I think the best you can do is to keep trying to educate people no matter what. You may not change the whole site in one day, but you might make it through to a few of them.

Thanks, and good luck!

Thank you for this blog! I actually hadn't realized before how offensive this is for people (nor how ridiculously popular it seems to be), and I feel like I've been educated. :D (I realize this isn't asking anything, but I figure you get a lot of hate mail, so I wanted to send something supportive.)

Thanks so much. It’s really nice to hear something positive among all the ignorant, ranting hate mail. ^_^

~ Hi, I have a question for you. I am not of American or native American decent (Scandinavian, here =) ) but I have a deep interest in the native american cultures, and I happen to find headdresses very beautiful. I realise that this is a sacred item, and so I wonder that if I were given a headdress, made by one of native american decent, would it be OK for me to keep it? I wouldn't wear it as a fashion object, but rather find some other way to honor it.

I think if something is given to you as a gift by someone of that culture, then they mean for you to have it. If a Native or First Nation person gives you a headdress, it should be fine to keep it. But you’re correct, wearing it would not be appropriate. Good question. :)

Have you considered the fact that tagging your posts "Stupid White Girl/Boy/Hipster" is just as racist as what you are accusing these people of? If you are going to take a deliberate stand against racism, one would be careful not to be guilty of it themselves, no?

No. Because racism is about power and oppression, and it is impossible for white people to be systematically oppressed. Also, these people are stupid. Calling them stupid is not racism.

For example, your question to me is stunningly ignorant and privileged. There! I just told you the truth, and it wasn’t racist!
